Madhya Pradesh and its ancient treasures; Khajuraho

The entire world knows about the Kamasutra.Well this quaint little village has the Kamasutra on the walls of its temples. Khajuraho is a renowned tourist spot now because of the famous reliefs and sculptures that adorn the walls of the sacred temples. The temples are spread out across a large area with some a bit far away and the rest all together in a huddle.

The sculptures along the wall are extremely well carved and ornate. They depict everything from the consummation of a marriage to the pleasure seeking of kings and queens. The reliefs are rather ornate and not very easy to replicate.

Besides the sexual knowledge that you gain from these temples you also get a glimpse into the past of India itself and how tolerant it used to be about such natural acts and how the scene has drastically changed over the centuries. The craftsmanship as well as the idea behind all these sculptures show that there is no shame of what they are displaying and there is no shame in the admission into seduction.

‘Besides the sexual innuendos, these are a marvel of engineering as well.’ When I had gone to the village and was looking for a guide to take me around the various temples and tell me about the historical facts and other information, but a bunch of them refused solely because there was explicit content to be described and I was a bachelor. According to them only married couples are allowed to see what is made on the walls, little do they know where the youth of today has reached. It is the exact contradiction I mentioned above.

There was another thing that astonished as well as amused me, there were a number of sculptures/ reliefs that showed a horse, which was probably being sexually assaulted because there was a spear being shoved up his rear end. But the weirdest part is that I later realized that I had not seen a single horse anywhere in the vicinity of the village during my entire stay there. Maybe there is some story there that we just don’t know yet. Besides the sexual innuendos, these are a marvel of engineering as well. The scorching heat outside burns the ground, but inside the temple it is cool as a cucumber. The inner sanctum of the temples were especially very cool despite the heat outside and without any blockages as well, i.e there was a clear view of the inner sanctum from the outside and no obstruction was in place.Just imagine the brilliance of architecture, how temperature can be manipulated simply by the right placement of rocks.

All of these make you think of the level of brilliance the people of this time had achieved in art and architecture is unparalleled to today’s world. They had reached a level of design that the thinkers of today can only think about but never execute. They left behind one of the greatest legacies the subcontinent has witnessed.
